WINTER RETREAT FAQs

Who can attend?

All 6th-12th grade students are invited to join us.

 

How much does it cost?

$129 per student.  $75 Deposit is required upon registration.  All balances are due February 7.

*The $75 deposit is refundable up to January 20, 2020 with written notification to Mathew Hargett.

**Financial scholarships are available upon request. 

 

What if I have multiple students?

Multi-student discounts are available for families with 3 or more students attending. The first two students should pay the full price and then the third (and subsequent) student registrations will only need to pay the $75 deposit.

 

What's included in the cost?

The retreat cost includes transportation, lodging, all meals (5), t-shirt, retreat book, and activities. 

 

Where is the retreat held?

The retreat is held at Crowders Ridge Camp & Retreat Center in Gastonia, NC. 

 

What are the accommodations like?

Students are housed in bunkhouses with a bathroom. There are separate shower houses near the bunkhouses. Linens are not provided. Students will be divided by gender and grade. Each room will have two adult leaders.

 

What is the food like?

Food service is provided by the conference center and offers 3 buffet style meals each day with up to 8 serving lines to accommodate large groups quickly and efficiently.  They provide gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options at all meals and are willing to work with food allergies. 


What time is drop off and pick up?

Check-in begins 4:15pm Friday February 7th.  We will leave Good Shepherd Church at 5:00 pm.  We will arrive back at Good Shepherd Church at ~4:00pm Sunday February 9th.  

 

How are students being transported to the conference center?

We will be using charter buses to transport students and leaders to and from Crowders Ridge.

 

Do students need additional money for the weekend?

Yes. There is a cafe/snack shop on site where students can purchase snacks and drinks. We will also be selling Winter Retreat themed merchandise throughout the weekend. 


How are students grouped for the weekend?

All students meet together for worship and the main sessions.  Students will also participate in a small group of 8-10 other students and one adult leader for deeper discussion of the sessions. Small groups will be divided by grade and gender and will contain students from both campuses.

 

How many adult leaders are going?

We will have at least one adult leader for every 6 students.  All leaders are appropriately vetted and equipped to lead students.  

 

Are students allowed to bring friends?

Yes! We encourage students to invite their fellow middle or high school friends to join us on the retreat. Friends will need register by the deadline (January 26th).

 

What should students bring with them on the retreat?

All registered students will be emailed a packing list a couple of weeks before the retreat.

 

Are there any other forms I have to fill out?

Yes, all students must turn in a completely filled out medical release and participant consent form signed by a parent/guardian to attend the retreat.  Forms are linked below.

 

What are the activity options?

Since Crowders Ridge is a new location there are new activity options for students to participate in. Some are included with the retreat cost and other are additional. Included activities are hiking, nature trails, basketball, volleyball, GAGA, nine square, carpetball and winter tubing. 


Additional activity options include paintball, giant swing and leap of faith, which are $10 per activity. (If a student chooses to do all 3, it would be an additional $30.)
